Training by Tyson — Sep 26, 2008 at 04:37 pm

I haven’t been this sore for a long time! It’s like an old friend coming back to visit, nice but can get annoying if they overstay their welcome…

Last Wednesday I taught the hardest class I had yet at NW Crossfit. For the entire class we only used three precision trainers! All balance conditioning, all class long :) Small classes can get that way easily I think. The next day I got pulled into a brutal Crossfit workout, then Rafe came back from Europe and shared what he had learned about the necessities of conditioning. We started with 10 minutes straight of various QM work, then went to precision training, courses, and some really interesting conditioning stuff at the end.

All in all my legs are really feeling it! I think I’ve been settling into a routine teaching the classes and getting so busy with PNWPA stuff, gotta introduce some more hard stuff and train more.

The Tyson news today comes to you in bullet form, fun!

Parkour Generations in Ohio was crazy awesome. Some random photos oh mine -here- and a full writeup soon.

The last Parkour class of five for Billings Middle School went great! I didn’t really blog about these because Christian was the main guy heading them up, but I joined in for the majority of the classes and he did a great job. The last class had a longer time slot and the ability to split them up between four instructors which made everything really smooth. These have a great story behind them, will be up here or http://pnwpa.com

I’ve trained hard every day since coming back from Ohio except for these last two and it feels great! Been transforming the local jams a bit as well, getting everyone to push through a hard conditioning warmup and finish with a challenge and cooldown. Sounds like people have been really enjoying that, hopefully it will stick when I’m not around.

I’m moving my YouTube account and am going to start using it more, the new one is -here- . The PNWPA also has one which is being updated as well.

The 1023 is finally (just about) done! All five billion pages of it! When submitted and allowed to cook for awhile this turns into an official 501(c)3 certification which instantly gaining us thousands of dollars in donations and grants! Ok maybe not instantly….

Meetings! Coming up: UW Outreach Committee’s first meeting, first Board meeting after Ohio, first follow up meeting with Seattle Parks and Rec after WRPA conference. Guess who’s going to all of them!

Travel! MOVNAT with Rafe and Erwan in Bellingham on 14-15th. NYC for training with friends and PKNY 16th-23rd. Washington DC for training and Tribe meetup 23rd-27th. Chicago for national jam 28th-30th. Cya there!

That’s right, a few days ago five members of the Pacific Northwest Parkour Association traveled East through sleet and slow to attend the hallowed but mysterious Washington Recreation and Park Association Annual Conference in Kennewick. Here’s how it went down.

PNWPA: Wow way more people showed up than expected, that’s awesome!
WRPA: Hello!
PNWPA: We heard that you guys didn’t know all that much about parkour, so here we are! Check out all these pretty resources we’ve been creating, watch our video, and listen to some of our stories…*edumacation*
WRPA: That’s really cool! But we have a lot of questions.
PNWPA: Well ask away, but remember that people will be training this stuff with or without us and the most we can do is act as a bridge to you while creating opportunities for beginners to learn this stuff safely and progress within their limits. Safety. Respect. Community. Accomplishing things!

WRPA: …Good points, but what if someone falls and potentially dies?!
PNWPA: Well what has happened in the past with accidents at parks? We’d like to ease your mind as best as we can (because parkour is very safe), but we could use some help defining exactly what the liability issues are and finding solid insurance.
WRPA: Well we don’t know all that much about insurance and liability except that we are supposed to worry about them a lot!
PNWPA: …awesome…Let’s go outside and teach you guys some stuff!
WRPA: Kickass!

…that’s pretty much what happened minus a bunch of real answers ;) Actually it was an incredible opportunity for us, and everyone seemed open about working together! We made some great connections and are really excited for the future, big thanks to Ken Cohen and Jeremy (Raindog) for making it happen!
