Travels by Tyson — Oct 31, 2007 at 06:04 am

A quick four hour flight brings me to Boston in time to catch the sunrise. I have a feeling this is going to be a good trip :) Already have some parkour stuff lined up, and there are a bunch of friends to catch up with over here. I haven’t seen much of the city yet as we are staying in the Quincy area, but I’m digging it so far.

Off to catch some sleep before Halloween.

My Videos and News Articles by Tyson — Oct 30, 2007 at 01:50 am

I helped organize this quick webisode for KIRO-TV’s IWitness video website at UW. Luckily the rain held up long enough for us to demonstrate some fundamentals, a traversal challenge, and parts of the new “Brutalist” gauntlet. Thanks go to Michael Fox, KIRO’s videographer, for putting this all together and doing a great job. Check out his recently learned wallpass at 1:41 ;)

Traceurs involved: Tyson Cecka, Jeremy (Raindog), Kellen (Recurve), Christian, Jonathan.

I really like how he simply had us narrate the whole thing, rather than doing the usual media thing and inevitably getting something wrong. On the flipside of that I need more work on my grammar for this kind of thing, some dumb stuff still came out of my mouth ;)

I’m off to Boston on Tuesday for a few weeks. No jobs, just fun this time. Bringing my new macbook pro and photo/video equipment so there may be something interesting coming out of it ;)

Going to try to blog as much as a can during the trip as always, can’t wait!

Training by Tyson — Oct 27, 2007 at 03:29 am

As well as experimenting with fluidity training recently, I’ve been trying to mix up conditioning sessions to be a bit more interesting as well. Gauntlets are one great way to do this (an example of the new UW one is coming), but we’ve also started to mix in creativity challenges with the conditioning exercises and it’s been a lot of fun.

I’ve been doing a lot of backend work on the site for the last few weeks and I’m happy to say that it actually works, and quite well! What I’m referring to is my new way to pull in images to posts, and display them. Example below (not going to work in a feed reader):

Ramblings by Tyson — Oct 23, 2007 at 08:27 pm

My second favorite tree branch has been cut down in it’s prime. It was a perfect beautiful thing, and someone has cut it down for no apparent reason :(

I looked upon it today in shock, I have spent many many hours swinging on this branch and it has taught me many things. This coupled with the benches they drilled into the floor up top just about totally ruins one my favorite little rushes. But life goes on and I must now find some new favorite trees…

You will be missed.

Other Videos and Training by Tyson — Oct 16, 2007 at 10:49 pm

Awhile ago (edit: 2 years) in the heyday of parkour.net there used to be some sort of bias against “flow” or training directly for fluidity. Whenever some new person would talk about trying to gain more fluidity in their movements or how cool something looks because of its flow, we would always say something along the lines of “Fluidity comes as a byproduct of training for parkour, it’s not the end goal.”

Too Strict?

And I can totally see why that seemed important to say, it was part of the never-ending battle to move parkour back to its origins of being a useful discipline, rather than just something that looks cool. But what’s wrong with training for fluidity directly? (if you are not already making that original wrong assumption)

Events by Tyson — Oct 10, 2007 at 08:21 pm

I’m still here and alive! Haven’t been updating very recently, but have gotten some great training in and I’m working on a few exciting projects for the future. No stunt jobs though, in a bit of a lull for those, but that just gives me more time to prepare.

Mt Baker Gym Jam

Which brings me to this month’s gym jam! Once a month the Washington Parkour community rents out a whole gymnastics gym up north in Burlington where we run a beginner’s workshop, a martial arts workshop (sometimes), and a bunch of free time / challenges. It’s a great way to get introduced to parkour in a safe environment, and it’s generally just a hell of a lot of fun :)

This month it’s happening this Saturday at 6pm and Rafe is also hosting a jam the next day in one of the beautiful parks up there. Check out -this thread- for more info on both jams (and to catch a ride up)!

How would you like to be hired to travel to Lisse and train under the Yamakasi, Stephane Vigroux, and Seb Goudot? Sounds like a beautiful dream right? Well my fellow Tribe member Ryan Ford (Demon) was given that opportunity a few weeks ago for a documentary on parkour by ESPN. And he wrote the whole thing up very well as a featured story on American Parkour, excerpts below:
